Greg Washburn

Dates: October 9, 1943

Comments: My dad, Edgar Wheeler Washburn, from Jersey City, New Jersey, probably known as "Eddie" was on the original crew of the PUFFER SS268. He was stationed at Manitowoc, Wisconsin at one point. He served at least through the harrowing October 9, 1943 depth-charging on the first war patrol. The sub was under attach for 30+ hours. I think he may have served on a few more patrols, but was re-assigned to the sub-tender Orion. I believe that he was stationed out of Fremantle for the most part.

He had blue eyes, blond hair, and about 140lbs. He was the "class clown" type so probably easy to remember.

I am looking for anyone that may have known him.

I can be reached at washwashburn@att.net

Shipmates, Sailors, Family -

Just viewed the nice website. I too am a son of a PUFFER crewmember. My dad was on the commissioning crew, the shakedown cruise, and the first war patrol.
I know that he was originally stationed in Manitowoc, Wisconsin after basic training in Great Lakes and sub school in New London/Groton.

His name is Edgar Wheeler Washburn from Jersey City, New Jersey. He was on board during the October 9, 1943 depth-charging of 30+ hours. He also served on the subtender ORION stationed out of Fremantle/Perth, and I think that he sailed on the ORION back to Staten Island New York after the war.

Am especially interested in finding anybody that knew my dad, and am trying to find a photo of him.

May god bless all of you.
