Comments: Galley slaves are us! We were Puffer Power and Light! Hey guys, it was tough but I learned a lot about how NOT to treat people. I am in Colorado, I know J. Lonnie Gourley lived in Steamboat Springs, what ever happened to Militante, Crippen, Skinner, Bones(MM), Perez, "Buds" Dave Hennig, Gary Adair, Behrens, Chief Oleson, Bill Byerly, Bucky Wingate and the rest of us E-Div nukes from the refueling overhaul? (forget Aligood) We were under "lack-o-witz"

Nuke and galley slave were synonymous.

Comments: My son, Paul L. Ellison served on the Puffer during the Vietnam period. He was on it when it returned to Pearl Harbor and had difficulty in getting the hatch open. He has never talked much about his experiences but I feel that some of them were very traumatizing. He was a Quartermaster.

Comments: After 17 years leaving the Puffer, someone finally tracked me down. Thank you Mr. Stohr for calling me and letting me know about this web page. Just talking with Walt left me somewhat dumbfounded at first. Many memories filled my head about all the good times we had while we were on the Puffer. Some of the memories that I'll share with you: Remember when I put my badge on the Subroc and turned it in? Boy oh Boy,,,,Mr. H.W. Habenmeyer did not appreciate that one. Or the time we blew the shit tanks on the XO's corvette as we were pulling out from the pier? Remember shooting potatoes and oranges from the pyrotechnic tubes across the pier into the barracks? Smiles anyone? Who was the first to smile anyway? What about the first pitcher of Mojo in the P.I. How bout when we turned off the rudder control and did a 360 on the mid watch and the diving officer was snoozing and didn't catch on until sonar called and asked if we were doing a baffle check. That home made wine with fresh fruit and juice w/ yeast was pretty yummy wasn't it? Anyone know where Mark (Rat-So-Relli) is? After I left the Puffer I re-enlisted and went to the USS Darter stationed in the Phillipines. It was in drydock and I stayed there for about a year. Once they were out of drydock we went back to their homeport of Sasebo, Japan. I spent another year there when I got busted and went to the USS Proteus in Guam. After doing a stint there for about a year I went to Treasure Island for my separation and got a job at The Men's Wearhouse. Been here ever since. When I left Treasure Island I hooked up with Bruce Avery and Turtle and reminisced about old times. Anyway, I really have to get back to work now and hopefully I will here from some of you guys. I currently live in Houston, Texas and my email address is daengland@tmw.com Would really love to get some pictures if any of you have them. I lost alot of my things when they were shipped overseas back home. Talk about effeciency huh? Gotta go. Hope to hear from someone. Dewey-Bird England

Comments: Without question the memories of the Puffer are among the best. Mr. John Sampson and the bogus phone at periscope depth, with Chief Baker at the BCP will always be my favorite memory. Neeless to say Tod Kappes starioned all participants at locations throughout the boat. That was hysterical. With men like that in control of our submarine I knew at 21 years old I could sleep good. Marty clouser sleeping with the pigs foot. Elaster being locked in the bathroom and nobody let him out. The practical jokes kept the fun. I never realized how much of an extended family I had till I got out. Will somebody tell bob palmer that hickies don't go on the back of your neck. Where is Fast Eddie O'Connor, they had the woodstock reunion this summer I figured he had to go back. Lastly, I grew up a lot. The boy from Cumberland, Wis, becamc something after my life on Puffer. Thanks to all shipmates that helped me. Greg Gaskin, I still owe you after you tacked on my dolphin! ! s 3 days after the ceremony, I still have tears when I think of that blind punch.

To Mr. Habermeyer I appreciated what you did for us, but not back then. J.B. Ellis now LT,MSC,USN
