still give plankowners a piece of the ship when she is decommissioned?

I was stationed aboard Puffer from right after WESTPAC71 until just prior to sea trials after the first overhaul.I remember a lot of the guys in the WESTPAC71 photos. It's been a long time, but I'll always remember my first dive. When the Puffer was decommissioned, was she scrapped or just mothballed?
I now work for NASA driving computers instead of subs. Planning my retirement soon,so if you would please add my name and E-mail address to your list.
9/10/98
Hello again Don, I am afraid I am the bearing the bearer of bad tidings. The USS Puffer is no more. I confirmed this through a telephone conversation with a Mr. Burton at the SRP office at PSNS. Diassembly began in late 1997 and the last major hull pieces left PSNS in February 1998. Some of the interior systems remain in salvagable storage. The reactor compartment arrived at Hanford on Dec 23,1997,but is not yet disposed of. I confirmed this info through a personal source. I was amazed at the diversity of Subs now at PSNS for scrapping, there were even some later models of the Los Angeles class. I suppose military downsizing is the reason. But for now the only evidence left of our boat is a ship's patch and a plaque in the Bremerton Naval Museum.

Craig Hansen hansenz@prodigy.net Dates: 80-84 I got to the Puffer in Jan 80, Cdr Mathiowetz was the CO and I was an EM2 nub starfish. I served under Capt. Habermeyer and later for a thankfully short time under Cdr. Greeson. I left as an EM1/SS in Jan 84 after ended up as the E Div. leading first for about 2 years. When Capt. Habermeyer had the boat we were a tight hot running weapon. Fast, black, and never come back was never truer than it was those 3 years. We never missed an underway time and never failed to achieve the mission. Many of us started out not much more than boys but we came back as men with a lot to be proud of. I would love to hear from any of you that rode that boat, keep in touch. The steel part of her is cut up and laying on the pier at PSNS but what really made her what she was is us. His name is Bob Keeley and he lives in Enumclaw WA. I don't know if he has internet access or not but I'll try and let him know about the page anyway. |
A Note about the late Mark McGrath
by Craig Hansen
Mark McGrath was on the boat when I was some time from 79-84 or so, he was and E Div-er and now he's gone. It's been a while since he died but here's what I know.
Mark was married to a former University of Hawaii cheerleader who, at the time of his death, was an emergency room surgeon at Tripler Army Medical Center. She was a Major, I think in rank. They had no kids.
Mark had made Chief and was selected for the Officer Program, but he decided to leave the service and work for Raytheon at US $140,000.00 a year prior to accepting either advancement. When he died he was a Vice President for Hawaiian Electric, I think that was the company, in Hawaii.
He died from a blow to the head from a large metal flashlight. He was drinking in combination with other medication and apparently seemed deranged to the bartender in the bar he was in. The man felt he was in danger and hit him with the flashlight.
It would be nice to put something up about him. Maybe the details of his demise would further sully his less than steller reputation among his peers. He was shipmate and deserved better.
Addresses for people that knew him: HarryTHO@aol.com, SubVet85@aol.com, and me.

Comments: Remember the first weekend we had had in over three months inport when A-gang flooded the generator end of the diesel? Hey, Teddy, remember the night of the barracks party and the guy that confiscated your SECOND bottle of JD? Or the wonderful times trying to stuff JOY connectors into plugs that didn't want to cooperate while our families waited on the pier? Reading some of the other entries here brought back some interesting memories.

Comments: Great Website!! I was never actually stationed on Puffer, but I had a lot of "ride time" on her. First, I rode during the '83 deployment, I was a last min. replacement for 2 ESM ETs that failed a whiz quiz. I was a CPO selectee at the time and had a great time messing with the COB (Lathrop). I loved to see those veins in his neck pop out!! Next, I rode a lot when I was CSS-1 EMO. Remember the Balzam fiasco? I got a Navy Achievement medal for that cluster/foxtrot! I really miss the Puffer, and all the 637s.

Comments: I was a Nuke MM. I got to the boat with Fred Lantz. Like him, I was happy to leave. The only good thing about the boat was the friends I found. With better leadership we could have had a better boat. I wish I could have seen it the way it's been descibed by the earlier Puffer sailors.

Comments: Really good web page. Great to see how everyone is doing. After PUFFER, went to HONOLULU as Navigator. Right now, I'm working at CINCPACFLT as the Y2K Action Officer - obviously, they are keeping me pretty busy. Micki is expecting our first rugrat in April, so our life is changing. Drop me a line when you get the chance.
