Comments: Really enjoyed the site. I was part of the com. crew. She had just come of the weighs when I reported aboard. I come on as an FTG3(SU) and left an FTG1(SS). I was the fire control LPO the last year and a half I served on Puffer. About the last thing I did was the West-Pac. I saw a lot of old freinds names on the crew list. Would be interested in hearing from anyone from the com. crew. Again, thanks for the web page, it's great!

Comments: Enjoyed the page. Found some old friends. Was on the com crew and thru the first Wes-Pac. Any one know the location of Chuck Geer? He was a radioman on the com crew. Would love to hear from anyone else that served on her while I was on board.

Message: Puffer was the proudest ship & crew I served on during my career. I crossed paths with her several times over the years. Just before I retired she was in San Diego and it was really neat to walk around below decks remembering the countless watches and adventures we went though.

Bob Stump
ssn652@aol.com

Dates: APR 77 to DEC 80

Comments: Hardest working mess crank she ever had! I volunteered for two rotations at it. There were not enough healthy non quals to do the job when we pulled out of Subic, so I was a ET2(ss) mess crank.

Funniest memory:
Doc mis-ordered a gross, gross shipment of rubbers so we used them as balloons.

Confession:
Russel Crump's wife slept in 18 man berthing. I was topside watch and looked the other way so she could board. We had a dependants cruise but she could not get a room at the hotel. The chiefs kept it quite so that I wouldn't get captains mast.

During Bremerton shipyards we lost two shipmates from motorcycle accidents.

Comments: I got to the boat in 78 when it was in Bremerton for the overhaul. Thats where I met C. W. Johnson, Chuck McKenna, Karl Kawuchi, Mike Crippen, Paul Lopez, Dennis Skinner, Lonnie Gorley., Master Chief Adams, Mark Byerly, Gene Skelton, Greg M., Joe Lucero, Mike Sandhoefner. We took the boat to Hawaii in 79. I served on the boat until May of 82 when I got out. I was the RC Div LPO for about 1 year, along with being the traing Czar. Hawaii is where I met my wife Fran. For you crew members that survived the bachelor party and the wedding, we're still married after 18 years. ( I now have 2 boys ages 16 and 14) I have been working at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (Phoenix, Arizona) pretty much since 82. I work there as a Instrument and Control Technician. Ben Cross also worked here for about 10 years and is now working at the Fermi plant south of Detroit. Karl Kawauchi showed up here once for and outage as a contract Technician. He had been going to school and working as a musician in Hawaii. Take Care and E-mail me. Rex

WALTER J. STOHR, JR.

Dates: 1981-1982`

Comments: GREAT PEOPLE! GREAT MEMORIES! GREAT BOAT! GREAT SITE!

SINCERELY,

WALT STOHR A.K.A. "MR. STOHR"

Comments: AFTER READING SOME OF THESE STORIES IT MOST DEFINETLY BRINGS BACK SOME GREAT MEMORIES. I WENT TO THE DECOMMISSIONING CEREMONIES WITH MARK PASSARELLI, J.B. ELLIS, & JIM RANKIN. WE REMINISCED ON THE DRIVE FROM ARIZONA TO SAN DIEGO AND HAD A BLAST! HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE THINGS I'WILL NEVER FORGET. HOW ABOUT "BOBO" TESTING THE SHIPS ALARMS? EVEN BETTER GREG GASKIN HARPING ON HIM ABOUT IT. THEN THERE WAS PO MAY ALWAYS RUNNING AROUND SAYING "IT'S ALL ####ED-UP"! WESTPAC '81-'82. "ROAD TRIPS" IN THE P.I. (SIN CITY & P. BAY) THE SHELL BACK FESTIVITIES WHEN I MADE THE MISTAKE OF TELLING CHIEF CROUSE THAT I'D RATHER PUSH MY HARLEY THAN RIDE HIS RICE BURNER! THE CHRISTMAS '81 PLAY. MAUI. CLAY DODSON'S DRAWING OF "RAT-SO-RELLI". "UNCLE EDDIE". TODD KAPPES' MOHAWKS & TATTOO.

I COULD GO ON FOREVER, HOWEVER I AM AT WORK. IT WAS NICE TO SEE SOME OF THE CREW MEMBERS AT DECOMMISSIONING. WHEN WILL THE NEXT REUNION BE AND WHERE WILL IT TAKE PLACE? MY ADDRESS IS 819 NEELY HEIGHTS AVE. CORAOPOLIS, PA. 15108. MY HOME PHONE # IS (412) 269-9262 FAX: SAME. MY WORK PHONE NUMBER (724) 770-6611 FAX: -5526 OR (412) 788-4720 FAX: -5410.

HAS ANYONE HEARD FROM DUVON "DEWEY-BIRD" ENGLAND?

SINCERELY,

WALTER J. STOHR, JR. AKA "MR. STOHR"

Comments: THE WAY I SIGNED MY LAST E-MAIL WAS A BIT CONFUSING. AT THIS TIME (04/20/99) I AM A CONTROL SYSTEMS ENGINEER. I HAD A NICKNAME WHEN I WAS ABOARD THE PUFFER, IT WAS "MR. STOHR". I RECEIVED IT WHEN I DROVE A RENTED SUZUKI ATV UP TO THE HALEAKALA CRATER IN MAUI.

Comments: Nice idea. BZ to the inventor. I spent a lot of time on Puffer, 2 WestPacs, 2 Artic Runs, and just barely missed the final WestPac. Damn, maybe next time. I would like to take this time to thank Hillborn for timing his naps on watch in between the CO's trips into Sonar. And to Kevin Albee for helping tape Lamoreaux to Broadband. Stop talking trash Lamoreaux ( a.k.a Radar ) or Kevin and I will have to find the EB Green again! I'm surprised more Sonarmen have'nt found this page. I guess if it does'nt have headphones and a set of PRO's its just to complicated. Just kidding fellas. Well I'm of to the showers before the damn Nukes pull the plug on the evaporator.

I remember manuevering watches with you, Scroggins, Meyers, Flagor, Nash, Lukenhans(?), Footit, Waldman, and many others very well. Thanks for keeping me from breaking anything too badly! I have been out of Navy since I left Puffer in 1992 and have worked in Telecommunications. Most recently, moved back home to Boston with my wife (Susan - Who I met while on Puffer at Cass Street Bar and Grille)and two boys. I am with a startup company called AccessLan Communications.
