Eric Will
will@ieee.org

Dates: '68 to '72

My dad was John Will, CO USS Puffer, from 1968 to 1972. Dad passed away in the summer of 1996 after a brief but fierce battle with cancer. Lt. Pat Brown, another Puffer plank owner, was killed in a car accident weeks later on the way home from visiting my mom.

As I grew up, many of the men who served aboard Puffer under my dad said the ship was very special. She was very special to me and the rest of the Will family. At the time of the 1971 WESPAC I was 13 years old. I felt like I had the entire wardroom for older brothers. The photos sure bring back memories.

My youngest brother, Alex, is the first-ever third generation submariner. Alex served aboard the USS Silversides in the mid-80's. He's now a reservist LCDR and lives in the DC area.

My grandfather John M. Will Sr. was a submariner in the WWII days. He retired as a full Admiral in 1959. If you check the index of books about submarines in WWII, you can usually find 'Dutch' Will.

Dad retired as a Captain in the early '80s.

It was my mom's father, Hans Walleen, who painted the woman shown on the wardroom wall. In case you've forgotten, her name was 'Red Right Reclining'. Grandaddy Walleen also designed the Puffer emblem. Mom lives in the DC area and is quite active in the submarine community, particularly the Naval Submarine League.

Submarines are in our blood. I may be the only 12 year old who ever 'dove' a submarine XC Hard Tank. I used to eat ice cream in the wardroom with Lt. Brown when he had the duty. One night he had to close out the tank and asked if I wanted to come along. (The nuclear Navy was a little different back then.)

I'm very proud to be a member of the submarine community, if only as a dependant. I'm lucky to be able to give something back to the community as an engineer at Sanders. We build serveral of the electronics systems aboard submarines, and we're working on technology that will be of great benefit to the US submarine service.

I recognized a few of the names in your guest book. Among them was Dave Lamb. If I'm not mixing folks up, Dave had an incredible beard. It would have done Sebastian Cabot proud. It really defined him. At the time, regulations required that he shave it off. As I recall, Dave was allowed to keep it by demonstrating to the corpsman that he could still get a good seal on an EAB. You might confirm the story with him.

The Puffer was and always will be a part of the Will family. Thanks so much for the wonderful trip down memory lane.

Eric

Comments: Great web site ! It's nice to see y'all's webpage for the USS Puffer to help keep our crews together. Contact me for photos, wild stories about the precommisioning crew and life in the Navy before urinanalysis! LOL

I spent 4.5 years in the Navy and 26 years doing submarine repair at Mare Island Naval Shipyard until it was closed by BRAC in 1996. I've got over 31 years as a civil servent working for the DOD and the USS Navy.

Now I'm down in S.Tejas repairing minesweepers. Check out their website: http://www.cnsl.spear.navy.mil/cmwc/

Check out these logos for 637 Class Subs: http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/cno/n87/637logo.html

Keep up the good work and let's ALL get together some time. Once a bubblehead always a bubblehead.

Comments: aw.. the good old days...like NIS questioning E- Div on who's bottle of vodka was in the E- Div locker in AMSLL, we alll knew but never told...never will. Or the time I picked up Crippen on my sholders in maneuvering and literally threw him out of maneuvering nearly hitting Capt. Habermeyer ( who was not impressed ) , hey, I got tired of Crippen stepping on my feet as he passed me when I was throttles. Or, picture this, 4 AM, inport and I'm called in to be throttles for start-up, as I turn to ask permission to enter manervering I see Pat and Ben, both red eyed from a terrific duty day ( battery charge, regular watch at SRO, start-up, manervering watch and first cond one watch at sea, good planning Eng ) , anyway the EOOW tells Ben to begin pulling rods and he starts to pull rods to 1". As I watch the rods pass 1" on their way to 1.1,1.2, I look over and Ben is fast asleep pulling rods out. I elbow Ben and look at the EOOW, good... Pat's teaching the EOOW plant start-up, who has his nose deep in the OPM's. Ben switches to another group and pulls them to the correct height and then goes back to the first group and begins to pull, the EOOW finally turns around and tells Ben to tell him when he changes groups...OK. If you can't remember me I'm the fat, bearded EM who played catcher on Puffer's softball team, you know..the team that always kicked Tautag ASS!!

Comments: I still remember walking into the galley during an extending WestPac and smelling peanut butter. All we had left to eat was refried bean, beef, mushrooms, and mostly everything to make bread. Somebody had peanut butter and XO made a bunk to bunk search until he found Fergson with cans of Peanut butter stashed in his rack. I never really understood Chief Waterford. I just agreed with everything he said and I was all right. I could write a book about everybody I met while serving on board. I also remember Bangman getting COBs fist in his mouth as I walked by the sonar room middle level. Those little green pills DOC gave me for my allergies made me see triples and that has got to be the highest I had ever been. I suppose drinking Strawberry Margaritas and drinking beer at the concert didn't help. If anyone knows Candra's e-mail give me it

Comments: Its been 11 years since those words "TM3 Don Watts Departing" I was the co-founder of the "89 club" with John Burke that was for those of us who were headed out into the civilian world to make our fortunes. I currently reside south of Seattle, WA and am still in weekly contact with Chuck Dills who lives east of here and Scott Stack who lives in Michigan. I still am married to Kim, for those of you who knew her. We now have two girls 8 and 6. I am currently finishing a BS in Business Administration and Kim is an RN. Many of you know I lost a lot of brain cells from the mass quantities of alchol consumed with my friends but I remember the days quite well.

Comments: In spite of the sometimes trying times, Puffer was an incredible experience. I still smile thinking of some of the crazy stunts pulled off. Where else could some find people not only willing coax you into lewd, lasivious acts, but right there along side participating... The dance of the flaming asshole, Lolita, the love muscle in Hong Kong, Guam (in general), the women (?) of Fiji... All are stories for the ages. The wild times and friends are sorely missed...

Comments: Update for my e-mail address. Still in Indonesia as the Naval Attache ducking bombs and demonstrators until I retire 1 Sep 01.

Comments: I am sorry to report the passing of a shipmate. ETCM Robert Kitzinger passed away late August 98 in an industrial accident on an oil rig. His funeral with full military honors will be at Fort Rosecrans Cemetery September 3.

As for me, I retire in just over 3 years after I serve as Naval Attache, Jakarta, Indonesia. Anyone passing through? Just like in command, if you get in trouble call the CO, now if you get in trouble in Indonesia, call me at the embassy.

Comments: Who set this up? E-mail me please.

Hello -
My name is Derek Warner (also known as "Killer" on board Puffer). I spent just over three years on Puffer - the last three years - I made the last west pac (Hawaii, Guam twice, Japan - Hong Kong, and Figi). Also rode her up to PSNS for decom, which just ended July 12, 1996 then I got out of the navy and am going to college here in Wisconsin starting this fall. I had a lot of fun - but one boat and one term in the navy is enough for me. I was a nuke mechanic. I don't know too many people that were on board when you were, but I'll throw out a few name's of people that I knew and maybe you might have known - Jim Waldman (ET1), Felix Sauceda (EM1), Ed Anelli (MM2), Jeff Myers (MM2), Reece Adams (MM2), Dave Fink (EM2), Rick Wright (CO), Swank (LT), Marv Taylor (MMC), Mike Murphy (MM1), John Curtis (MM2), Craig Hillborn (STS2) - that's all I can think of right now for the real old timers. Write back if you recognize any of them - Derek
